Abstract
This article explores the life of Malin Kundang in the context of the Minangkabau culture. Reader who views his life from the traditional perspective condemn him for refusing to accept his mother just because she is different from what he imagines her to be. Others however, attempt to deconstruct the story. Navis, for intance, deconstructs and gives it a new title, ie Malin Kundang: His Mother Is a Condemned Mother. Consequently, the Malin Kundang story loses it original intent as a legend. Nonetheless, this shows the dynanism inherent in the life and culture of the Minangkabau people. Malaysian readers on the other hand, tend to accept stories in the traditional perspective
