Abstract

Most historians conclude that the arrival of the Portuguese to the East was driven by three factors such as religion, politics, and economy, inspired by the concept of the three G 'Gospel, Gold and Glory'. However, political, and economic factors are often considered to be the main factors in the arrival of Portuguese colonists to the East rather than religious factors. The objective of this study is to prove the religious factor as the main mission of the Portuguese arrival to the East based on the religious sentiments that exist in the book 'The Commentaries of the Great Afonso Dalboquerque Second Viceroy of India'. The methodology of this study is qualitative by using historical research methods. The results of the study found that the Portuguese arrival to the East was caused by political, economic, and religious factors. However, every political and economic factor moves in tandem with the religious factor. The book ‘The Commentaries of the Great Afonso Dalboquerque Second Viceroy of India’ strengthens the results of the research because it reveals religious sentiments in the Portuguese mission in the East. Furthermore, it was written by Afonso de Albuquerque's son Bras de Albuquerque who used Afonso de Albuquerque's notes to King Manuel I while he was out sailing.
